The Game Awards premia os melhores jogos, estúdios e equipes que foram destaque durante o ano. O pré-requisito para para concorrer à premiação é que os jogos devem ser lançados antes de 24 de novembro de 2016. Os vencedores serão revelados ao vivo no The Game Awards 2016, no dia 01 de dezembro, no Microsoft Theater, em Los Angeles.

Hideo Kojima irá receber o prêmio Industry Icon Awards em homenagem ao conjunto da sua obra, ou seja, a série Metal Gear Solid.
